Intertek expert wins scientific achievement award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Basel, Switzerland – Intertek, a leading quality solutions provider to industries worldwide, has been recognised by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for scientific and technological achievement.

The EPA holds a biannual competition for published research that demonstrates scientific and technological achievement through improving our understanding of how chemical substances can effect human health and their potential risk to human health.

In 2014 Robert Peter, analytical laboratory manager at Intertek’s centre of excellence for analytical sciences in Basel, Switzerland, was commended by the EPA for being a co-author on one of the winning “Scientific and Technological Achievement” nominated research studies. Intertek is a recognised leading provider of precision chemical analysis that helps chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturers meet regulatory safety and compliance requirements.

Mr Peter contributed to a multi-disciplinary team carrying out research into the health risk assessment of the substance triclosan, which has widespread use as an antibacterial and antifungal agent found in many consumer products, including soaps, detergents, toys and, surgical cleaning treatments.

Mr Peter applied his extensive proficiency, drawn from 20 years’ experience in complex analytical chemistry, to establish highly sensitive and specific analytical methods utilising precision instrumentation such as liquid-chromatography- tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MSMS) which he then used to quantify triclosan at very low levels in laboratory samples.
